Here's the video of Hogan on the 72nd tee in the 1955 US Open where his right foot slipped. This slip was one of the incidents that helped Mike Maves (aka Sevam1) discover what he calls 'The Move.'
Special thanks to frequent poster 'Martinez' for posting this up on YouTube.

Hi Rich
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that the right foot is slipping I'm not even sure that it was the 18th hole !!!
Look at this little video I have made a few moths ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0H7PJ0ZGys
When Hogan was driving, he was sliding his right foot forward.
The hardest he drive the longest he is sliding.
To me when Sewan is speaking of the Move it is to prevent a bakward sleeping of the right foot at the end of the backstroke, when we have a lot of pressure on the right leg anchor.
What is your opinion ?
TY Cheers
Phil
It is weird here because he does slip the rear foot forward. I'll take it as 'the slip.' Sevam's move to me wasn't about preventing a slip backwards (although it could be somewhat used for that), I think it's more about creating a tight torque of the pivot on the backswing and that creating a powerful pivot on the downswing and keeping the golfer from getting the weight up on the toes on the downswing.
ReplyDeleteI can't tell where this swing is from but there is a definite difference in the way he swings 'normally' versus this one. There is some awkwardness and a funny move with his right leg and foot that is not evident in other videos of Hogan during this period of time in his career. Something is definitely note right and he does seem to be upset with the shot.

Like Phil said, I always took the infamous slip as a slip of the foot backwards. I am starting to think that this may be something worth investigating more to get a better understanding of Hogan's footwork and what he tried to accomplish with his footwork. At impact, Snead had his right heel on the ground, but Hogan had his right heel off the ground. I contend that both had excellent footwork and any golfer would be wise to follow their footwork, but that they were trying to accomplish different things with their lower body.
ReplyDeleteRichie,
ReplyDeleteUnfortunatly, this Hogan video was taken on the 1st tee at the Olympic Club. That's the pro shop behind him... it still looks the same to this day. I don't believe there was footage taken of the drive/slip on the 72nd hole.
Cheers,
Joe
