Playing with mid-to-high handicappers each week, one question that usually arises is 'keeping the left arm straight.' Here's a nice video by Jeff Evans discussing the straight left arm and how to keep it from being bent.
IMO, I pretty much agreen with everything Jeff says, although I think it should be noted that the left arm does not have to be straight in the backswing or at P4 and often times it's got a little bit of curve to it, and is not perfectly straight.
I think Strange is more of an extreme example of a bent left arm at P4, but that is something common of Jimmy Ballard's teaching philosophy. Although I think if want a more perfectly straight left arm, then I would suggest the Stack and Tilt method. I think the 'curved' left arms of O'Grady and Palmer are more than fine and Evans' tips can help you achieve that.

Nice video from Jeff Evans, but who has a golf ball on a string? How do you attach a string to a golf ball? An easier way to do the right arm extensor drill is demonstrated by VJ Trolio in Lynn Blake's "Alignment Golf" DVDs.
ReplyDeleteVJ show the drill using a cord or light weight rope. He forms a simple loop and then slips it up over his left arm and around his left shoulder. Then he holds the loose end of the cord in his right hand and pulls it tight from the left shoulder. VJ said he carried that cord and practiced that drill in his house for nine months to make the right arm extensor action automatic in his swing. He said the drill helped him get rid of the loose, flippy motion at the top of his swing. More importantly, he said the drill taught him to better control the club at the top which helped make him a better ball striker. He demonstrates with before and after swings ... the after swing is impressive.

Neat. I wasn't sure who could find a golf ball on a string. I was thinking something more along the lines of perhaps a small wooden block with a string attached to it.
ReplyDeleteEven easier, just put on a jacket with your left arm OUT of the sleeve. Use the left sleeve the way both Jeff and VJ use their respective training aids. Grip the cuff of the sleeve. Works like a charm...
